Open Cities were invited to present at the 5th Annual Translation and Linguistics Conference at the Academy of Graduate Studies held in Tripoli on 18 and 19 November 2009 Dr Marc Stephens presented a paper on Work Culture and the Informational Content of Arabic and English Idioms Compared. The paper argued that globalization is forcing change in the private sector across North Africa and a convergence towards international norms. But no such pressure exists in the public sector which continues to reflect traditional values and ways of working. What are these traditional values and what light can language throw on the differences between English culture and Arab culture and within North Africa, differences between different countries. The paper is based on an analysis of nearly 1000 idioms in Arabic and English and quantifies the relatively greater emphasis within Arab culture on social solidarity and the personal sphere versus business, sport, and seafaring in English cultural tradition.
